What does porn say about us?

I have to face the fact that one day my 6 year old daughter will stumble across online porn. The thought horrifies me, regardless of how old she will be when this happens. It’s not the images of people having sex that bothers me, but the message that it sends to young girls about what is expected of them by men.

I don’t want my daughter growing up believing that all men want to abuse women, or that a blow job and facial is the best way to let your husband know that you love him. So much porn seems to portray acts of violence against women, and I have struggled to understand why it is such a turn-on for men. Does it give men a sense of power or control over women? How in God’s name can it be perceived as something pleasurable for a woman.

I understand that some women might like to be dominated, but to send this message about all women via the internet to our children is surely going to impact on our love and respect for each other.

Despite being around for three decades, the internet is still in its infancy, and we have yet to see the affect that explicit abuse of women online will have on future generations. I pray to God – whoever she is – that we are able to dissociate ourselves from what is preached by the porn industry and realize that all human beings deserve love, respect and loving commitment.
